British Airways drops Heathrow flights a third day

22 December 2006

British Airways Plc canceled about 40 percent of its short-haul flying schedule at London Heathrow airport during a third day of disruption caused by dense fog, stranding thousands of passengers at Europe’s busiest airport.

British Airways, Europe’s third-biggest airline, is operating all long-haul flights, and is using twin-aisle planes to boost capacity on some short-haul routes from Heathrow. The three days of cancellations, including all U.K. domestic flights, will reduce earnings for the carrier this quarter, said Cathy West, a British Airways spokeswoman who declined to specify when an estimate will be released.

Spain Suspends Air Madrid’s License

17 December 2006

Spain suspended the flying license of Air Madrid airline Saturday, hours after the troubled carrier announced it was halting operations, leaving thousands of passengers stranded in Spain and abroad.

The Civil Aviation authority rejected Air Madrid’s proposals to resolve problems with repeated flight delays and security issues.

“‘This decision has been taken with total independence of the absolutely irresponsible and unilateral behavior of the company,'” a Civil Aviation statement said.

The two-year-old carrier, which mainly flies between Spain and Latin America, announced Friday that it was suspending operations.

Flights of Air Madrid in doubt as Spain may suspend license

14 December 2006

The flights of hundreds of thousands of passengers were placed in doubt, especially during the Christmas holiday period, after Spain’s government threatened to suspend the operating license of low-cost carrier Air Madrid for continuous departure delays.

The airline has come under fierce criticism in recent months for delays that have kept hundreds of passengers stuck at Madrid’s Barajas international airport for days.

A month ago, an Air Madrid flight from Madrid to Buenos Aires departed with a one-day delay. Police had to intervene when passengers protested at the airport’s terminal.

Air Madrid said on Wednesday that the company has sold some 300,000 tickets to passengers in the coming months.
