Continental New York helicopter shuttle takes off

Continental Airlines and US Helicopter Corp. have partnered to provide shuttle service between Manhattan and its Newark hub beginning Dec. 18.

US Helicopter customers traveling on the Houston-based airline will be able to check in, receive boarding passes for US Helicopter and Continental Airlines and complete security screening at the Manhattan heliport near Wall Street.

Continental Airlines launches Spanish online check-in

Continental Airlines has introduced an online check-in facility for Spanish-speaking passengers.

This feature allows these customers to select their own seats and slash the amount of time spent waiting at airports, said the US airline.

The move comes as part of the carrier’s “‘Latinisation'” scheme for Spanish-speaking passengers, which also allows customers to book their flights online in Spanish.


New strategic partnership between Thai Airways International and SAS

Thai Airways International and SAS Scandinavian Airlines recently held a code share agreement signing ceremony at thai’s head office in Bangkok. The code share agreement will include services to/from Bangkok-Singapore/Hong Kong/Kuala Lumpur/Sydney from December 15, 2006, and Bangkok-Melbourne/Brisbane/Auckland/Perth from January 15, 2007, as well as to/from Copenhagen-Oslo/Gothenburg/Aalborg/Aarhus from December 15, 2006.

Singapore Airlines plans to increase flights to India

Singapore Airlines yesterday said it is exploring the possibility of operating additional flights to Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore after the traffic rights are made available.

The airline would also start its sixth service from Bangalore and increase its capacity to the city by almost 20 per cent.

Australia won’t legislate against Qantas break-up

Australian Prime Minister John Howard said he would not introduce laws to stop a break-up of national icon Qantas Airways in a A$10 billion (4 billion pounds) buyout, citing a commitment to free markets.

At the same time, Qantas Chief Executive Geoff Dixon emphasised that buyout talks with investment firms Macquarie Bank Ltd.  and Texas Pacific Group were at an early stage.

Norway airline files civil suit vs. SAS

A Norwegian airline on Friday said it will sue a unit of Scandinavian Airlines Systems in civil court for allegedly stealing trade secrets.

Norwegian Air Shuttle said it wants “hundreds of millions of kroner” – or tens of millions of euros (dollars) – from SAS Braathens for allegedly misusing information received by e-mail and through a booking system about its rival’s business strategy.

Singapore Airlines expands code-sharing pact with Virgin Atlantic

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has expanded its code-sharing agreement with Virgin Atlantic Airways to provide more choice in flying between Australia, Britain, the United States, the Middle East and the city-state, the carrier said Friday.

Starting December 1, SIA passengers are to be able to fly from London to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dubai on Virgin Atlantic airplanes, SIA said in a statement.

Effective January 1, Virgin Atlantic passengers are to be able to travel on SIA flights between London and Sydney via Singapore.

Mergers may trouble regional airlines

Mergers among big U.S. airlines would darken the skies for their smaller, regional partners, analysts said on Thursday.US Airways Group Inc. on Wednesday offered about $8 billion for larger, bankrupt rival Delta Air Lines Inc. The bid is expected to spark consolidation in the U.S. airline industry. If this happens, the big airlines would likely cut capacity, which could in turn reduce their need for feeder service.

After the announcement of US Airways’ offer on Wednesday — which Delta is still considering — the shares of major airlines soared but those of several regional carriers fell, with SkyWest dropping 7.5 percent.

Kolkata-Frankfurt Lufthansa flight resumes after 35 years

Lufthansa would resume passenger services connecting Frankfurt and Kolkata from December 2, after 35 years with three weekly flights.

The airline would operate a 235-seater non-stop Airbus A340-300 between Frankfurt and Kolkata with a three class configuration establishing its presence across all metros with 45 weekly flights.

Its frequency could be increased with the hike in business, since the airline was permitted to operate 50 flights a week as per a new Indo-German Air Traffic Agreement.

Brazil’s TAM Airline Buys 37 Airbus Planes

Brazil’s largest airline, TAM, has signed a firm contract to buy an additional 37 Airbus aircraft, the European plane manufacturer announced Thursday. The purchase concerns 12 A319s, 16 A320s, three A321s and six A330 aircraft, Airbus said in a statement released in the southern French city of Toulouse, where the company has its headquarters.
