BA staff attack airline’s service

British Airways has confirmed that a staff survey has revealed that less than half its workers think the airline offers passengers value for money.

The study in this week’s edition of the carrier’s staff newspaper found that only 49% agreed that travellers got a good deal for their ticket price.

20 injured as turbulence hits KLM plane headed for Japan

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines on Thursday confirmed that 20 people were injured when one of its aircraft hit heavy turbulence a few hours after it took off on an overnight flight from Amsterdam to Japan.

Seventeen passengers and three crew were injured when a sudden drop in air pressure over St Petersburg caused the Boeing 777 to drop 50 metres, Bart Koster, a spokesman for the airline said.

Emirates Airline increases flights to South Africa from June

Emirates Airline will add four additional flights a week to its existing double-daily Johannesburg service from June 01.

Operated Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sunday, the additional flights will be operated by a two-class Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, offering 42 Business and 385 economy class seats.

SAS Strike Continues

With no end in the sight to the Scandinavian Airlines System cabin crew strike, the airline has decided to cancel flights to, from and within Sweden on Tuesday, making it the fifth day in a row.

Some 800 crew members walked off the job on Friday, after negotiators failed to reach an agreement over working conditions linked to the airline’s offer of a 10.2 per cent pay rise over 3 years.

Strike grounds Swedish airline

Cabin staff at Scandinavian airlines SAS’s unit in Sweden began a strike Friday, grounding hundreds of European and domestic flights after talks between unions and management broke down.

Scandinavian Airlines Sweden, part of SAS AB, cancelled 300 flights, affecting 20,000 passengers, and said it would cancel up to 150 on Saturday.

Brazilian airline plans direct Miami-Rio flights

Brazilian airline TAM is planning a direct flight between Rio de Janeiro and Miami, a first for the carrier, TAM officials say.

There is no start date for the operation but it is in the works, according to the airline’s press office in Brazil.

“‘We know we’re going to be up by the second half of the year, maybe by the end of the year,'” said Jose Sampol, TAM’s general manager for North America based in Miami.

The flight, he said, is to be available year-round and offer passenger and cargo service but all other details are pending. “‘At this point, we don’t have anything about the flight,'” Mr. Sampol said. “‘We don’t have any details about this route.'”

Strikes hit Alitalia as Italy looks for exit

Twin strikes stranded thousands of Alitalia passengers on Tuesday as the Italian government said it was willing to quit the state-controlled airline entirely by selling its whole 49.9 percent stake.

The strikes by air traffic controllers and Alitalia cabin crew caused travel chaos which also affected other airlines, threatening to frustrate fans of soccer club AC Milan planning to travel to Wednesday’s Champions League final in Athens.

Finland’s Finnair to provide text messaging, e-mails on flights

Finnair will enable passengers to send mobile text messages and e-mails on flights to the Far East starting next month, the Finnish airline said Tuesday.

The service will become possible on satellite telephones provided at each seat of the airline’s new Airbus A340 aircraft, to be delivered in June. It will first be available on routes from Helsinki to the Japanese cities of Tokyo and Nagoya, and Shanghai, China.

Brazil’s number 1 TAM and United Airlines form alliance

Brazil’s TAM Linhas Aereas and United Airlines, a founding member of the Star Alliance, signed Friday, May 18, a memorandum of understanding to develop an agreement that enables the airlines to offer code-share flights with each other and expands international destinations and frequent flyer opportunities for customers of both carriers.

The agreement will result in more options for customers traveling between Brazil and the United States and includes the implementation of codeshare on TAM and United flights, giving customers of United’s Mileage Plus and TAM’s Fidelidade programs the opportunity to earn and redeem miles to destinations never-before served.
