Airline passangers safe after emergency landing

One hundred and thirty-three airline passengers are safe tonight after their American Airlines plane made an emergency landing at the Miami Airport.Flight 862 was headed from West Palm Beach to Chicago — but had to be diverted because of nose gear problems.

BA’s new airline to fly direct Paris-JFK from June

OpenSkies, the new airline launched by British Airways to operate direct services from Europe to the US, intends to launch its first services on the route between Paris and New York JFK.

The airline has this week applied to the US authorities for approval for the services and says it intends to launch the new flights in June.

In documents filed with the US Department of Transportation, the airline says it intends to expand its services to connect Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt and Milan with New York as well as other US points.

Milan airports staff strike, 146 flights cancelled

Some 146 flights at Milan’s airports were cancelled on Tuesday when ground staff went on strike to protest against Alitalia’s plans to scale back its presence in northern Italy.

Airport sources said 102 flights were cancelled at Malpensa airport, one of Alitalia’s two hubs, and 44 at Linate, Milan’s smaller airport, during the four-hour stoppage.

SkyTeam outlines plans for Heathrow Terminal 4

SkyTeam and BAA have outlined their plans to make London Heathrow Terminal 4 a dedicated terminal for the 10 SkyTeam alliance members.

A £100 million expansion and renovation of T4 will be completed in spring 2009.

SkyTeam’s move to T4 will take effect over the next 12 months.

BA loses more luggage than European rivals

BA’s performance deteriorated in 2007, with a larger proportion of bags failing to reach destinations with their owners.

BA mislaid 26.5 bags for every 1,000 passengers it carried last year, compared to 23 in 2006, the Association of European Airlines. (AEA) reports.

Jet Airways, American Airlines launch code share partnership

Jet Airways and American Airlines today launched their code share partnership which would benefit passengers and frequent flier members of both airlines.

The frequent flier members of both carriers would have the benefit of earning points as they travel on these code share flights, Jet Airways said in a statement. They would be able to redeem these points on the route network of either airline.

Airline SAS makes fourth quarter loss, shares dive

Shares in Scandinavian airline SAS dived on Wednesday after it posted a fourth-quarter loss on problems with its Dash 8 Q400 planes and said it faced delays in turnaround plans and a worsening economic situation.

The airline, half of which is owned by Sweden, Norway and Denmark, added that replacing its fleet of Dash 8 Q400’s, permanently grounded after landing gear issues caused three emergency landings last autumn, would add to costs in 2008.

SAS shares were down 10.6 percent at 55 crowns by 1302 GMT, having hit 53.50 crowns — its lowest for more than three years.

Alitalia cuts flights at Malpensa to stem losses

Alitalia SpA, the state-controlled airline Italy is trying to sell, is cutting flights at Milan’s Malpensa airport because it’s “‘economically impossible”’ to maintain two hubs.Alitalia will eliminate unprofitable routes, keeping just three of its current 17 intercontinental flights at Malpensa while increasing traffic at Rome’s Fiumicino airport, the carrier said in a slide presentation on its Web site today. Mounting losses make it impossible to keep two hubs, the company said in the presentation of its summer 2008 schedule.

Air India to launch non-stop New York-Delhi flight

India’s national carrier Air India is launching a daily non-stop New York-Delhi service from Feb 8 with a state-of-the-art Boeing 777-200LR aircraft to reduce the travel time between the two cities to 14 hours.

The flight will depart from New York’s JFK International Airport at 4:00 p.m. local time and arrive in Delhi at 4:30 p.m. the next afternoon. Returning flights will depart Delhi at 12:30 a.m. and arrive at JFK at 5:45 a.m. local time the same day.

Aer Lingus signs agreement with low-cost US carrier

Aer Lingus has reached an agreement with a low-cost US carrier that will give the Irish airline’s passengers easier access to locations across the United States.

The agreement with Jet Blue means Aer Lingus customers will be able to book flights from Ireland to 40 US destinations from April of this year.
