Jetstar launches into Japan

Australia-based LCC Jetstar has begun its flights between Japan and Australia, launching the new international route with a celebration at the Sydney International Airport.

The airline will be flying between Sydney and Osaka and returning to Sydney via Brisbane and is expected to fly up to 2100 passengers per week between the destinations. The flights will be operated by a fleet of Airbus A330-200 aircraft with two classes of service.

“‘Jetstar’s expanding international operators out of Western Japan forms part of the Qantas Group’s continued focus on two airline brands for future growth and sustainable operations,’” said Jetstar CEO Alan Joyce. “J’etstar’s growing retail presence in both Kansai and Chubu regions will be underpinned by a direct marketing spend by the carrier of over AUD$10 million.’”


Flybe launches new summer season flights

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, today launches its first flights of the summer season, bringing a total of 13 brand new routes to travellers in the UK to key domestic and European destinations.

Following the recent acquisition of BA Connect, Flybe customers across the regions can also take advantage of a number of additional domestic and international destinations, and will see a significant price saving on these routes of £19 per passenger.

Iberia airline boosts N.Y.-to-Madrid service

Spanish carrier Iberia is increasing its presence at New York JFK. Air Transport World writes the carrier will boost its service between New York JFK and Madrid “‘to 14-times-weekly from 10 beginning March 25. It also will begin using A340-600s on the route, raising overall capacity 68 percent compared to the winter season.'”

Germanwings launches flights from Cologne to Sofia

Low cost German airline Germanwings said Friday it enlarges its business in Bulgaria with the first flight Cologne-Sofia-Sodia scheduled March 27.

Germanwings is a subsidiary of Eurowings, a partner of Germany’s Lufthansa. It will fly three times a week from Cologne to Sofia and back _ on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Airline to link gambling meccas

Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport will announce this morning a new airline that will offer nonstop flights to Las Vegas, linking the gambling meccas in an effort to bolster the Coast’s recovering economy and the tourism industry.

Allegiant Air, which in January 2006 began nonstop jet service to Vegas from Shreveport, La., will soon begin its operations on the Coast. Details about the partnership will be released today at the airport.

“‘We’re bringing a new airline and new service that will be a tremendous boost to the tourism on the Mississippi Gulf Coast,'” said Jim Pitts, the airport’s director of marketing and business development.

Emirates to double Australian flights

One of the world’s most luxurious airlines will double its Australian services by 2011.

Transport Minister Mark Vaile announced Emirates Airlines will operate an additional 35 flights each week to Australia by 2011.

“‘I welcome the successful outcome of this week’s negotiations with the United Arab Emirates which will provide Australia’s airports and tourism industry with increased airline operations and tourists,'” Mr Vaile said in a statement.

Emirates will operate from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

Northwest adds Japan-Honolulu flight

Northwest Airlines will add newer planes to its Hawaii service and add one more flight to Honolulu from Japan beginning this summer.

The airline will introduce newer wide-body A330 aircraft on its Tokyo-Hawaii flights starting July 1. The aircraft reportedly feature redesigned economy class seating and a fully interactive in-flight entertainment system.

Frontier to offer direct flights from Jacksonville to Denver

The Denver-based airline will have a flight departing Jacksonville at 6:10 a.m. and arriving in Denver at 7:50 a.m. mountain time. The return flight will depart Denver at 11:55 p.m. and arrive in Jacksonville at 5:15 a.m. The flights will be on 132-passenger A319 aircraft.

From its Denver hub Frontier flies to 48 U.S. destinations, eight in Mexico, and Calgary and Vancouver in Canada.

Senior Vice President for Operations Chris Collins said Jacksonville was a hole in Frontier’s schedule and the largest market in the U.S. without a direct flight to Denver.

Sky Express airlines is starting daily flights Moscow-Tumen-Moscow from April 12, 2007, the company informed.

Sky Express Airlines was founded in March 2006 is first Russian low-budget airline performing flights on the European part of Russia. It is expected that by the end of 2007 its itinerary network will include 20 flight paths to Russian countries, located in 600-3000 from Moscow.


Will Arkia go low-cost?

Arkia Airlines Ltd. is considering a $120 million investment to buy or lease four 70-100 seat jets with a range of 2,000 miles for flights to Cyprus and other regional destinations. The airline is examining CRJ 700 and CRJ 900 jets building by Canada’s Bombardier Inc. and Embraer 170 and 175, built by Brazil’s Embraer-Empresa Brasileira De Aeronutica SA. Arkia initially plans to buy or lease two planes, followed by two more at a later date.

These planes use short runways, which means that they can operate out of Tel Aviv’s Sde Dov Airport. Arkia is planning several flights per day, including to Cyprus, where it began to fly at the beginning of March.
