Germanwings announces UK expansion

Lufthansa-owned Germanwings will launch flights from Manchester and Heathrow to Stuttgart in 2012.

The routes are currently being operated by Lufthansa Regional partners CityLine and Contact Air.

From February 2012, the low cost carrier will fly 21 times a week between London Heathrow and Stuttgart.

Thomas Cook named ‘worst airline’

Thomas Cook Airlines has been named as the worst short-haul carrier by a consumer watchdog.

The company had the poorest results for overall customer satisfaction and the likelihood of being recommended to a friend. A panel of more than 8,000 ‘Which?’ members gave the airline a rating of 37%, while Ryanair was scored at just 38%.

The cabin environment of Thomas Cook Airlines was given one star out of five and Ryanair got the same rating for the quality of its boarding process. Both airlines were given two stars for their value for money.

Swiss International Air Lines was voted as the best short-haul carrier with a satisfaction rating of 76%. Aer Lingus came second with 67%. In the long-haul category, Singapore Airlines came number one with a rating of 89%. Air New Zealand was second (88%) and Emirates third (80%).

Airline cabin crew complain over ‘sexist’ Ryanair ads

Nearly 8,000 people have signed a petition against the ad, which shows a curvy Ryanair employee dressed in a bikini accompanied by the slogan ”Red Hot Fares & Crew”.

The carrier also produced a racy ‘2012 Cabin Crew Calendar’, showing female Ryanair crew in heels and bikinis.

The online petition on change.org also features outraged comments, with one woman stating: “‘Making staff take off they’re clothes to advertise air plane flights is sexist and objectifying, not to mention completely irrelevant.”‘

easyJet founder plans ‘The Car Club’

easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has announced plans for ‘’The Car Club” – a car rental scheme where customers can ‘’share”.

He has already joined the car hire business with easyCar rental company and the new scheme would run through its website.

A joint launch-project with Brent Hoberman, the co-founder of late bookings website LastMinute.com, The Car Club, due to launch in the New Year, will see registered owners pool their vehicles and allow them to be rented out for an hourly fee.

EasyJet success in ash detection technology

Technology that allows aircraft to measure volcanic ash concentrations so they can steer clear of dangerous clouds in mid-flight has been successfully tested by EasyJet.

The system used by the low-cost carrier could improve the mapping of ash clouds, helping regulators avoid shutting down large swathes of commercial airspace in response to volcanic eruptions.

Ryanair to raise peak baggage fees

Ryanair has announced increases in the fees it will charge passengers for checking in baggage during peak travel periods.

The increases will apply to flights in the months of June, July, August, September and at Christmas.

Peak period fees will rise by €5 or £5 to €25 for online bookings made from December 15.

Ryanair will also increase its checked in bag fees paid at call centres and airports by at least €25/£25 (from €35 to €60) per bag.

Ryanair and easyJet take reserved seating to low-cost battleground

Ryanair and easyJet are going head-to-head on the new battleground of paid-for allocated seating, as they seek to ramp up passenger numbers.

Ryanair is to extend its allocated seating service across all of its routes from January 2012.

EasyJet said that its prices for allocated seating would “‘stay true to easyJet’s commitments to low fares'”.

Both airlines operate a priority boarding service, which means for an extra charge, passengers can get first choice on seats.

Spirit Airlines fined $50,000 for false advertising on Twitter

Reports now show that the low-cost airline, Spirit Airlines, has just been fined some $50,000 for violating federal rules prohibiting falsely advertised prices. For those that do not know, the company did this advertising on Twitter.

According to the most-recent reports, Spirit Airlines sent multiple tweets advertising flights for just $9. This is a deal that some figured sounded too good to be true. As it would turn out, it was.

Ryanair claims Spanish victory in screen scraping scrap

Ryanair has hailed the success of its reCAPTCHA anti-screen scraping security measure claiming two Spanish sites have stopped displaying its prices.

The low-cost airline included the additional security measure from last week, prompting some in the trade to claim it was putting at risk one million of sales, a claim denied by Ryanair.

In the last few moments the carrier issued a statement hailing the move and saying both Edreams and Bravofly had stopped scraping its site for inventory.
