Northwest to start flying Boeing 787s in October 2008

Northwest Airlines Corp. said it plans to begin flying the new Boeing 787 “Dreamliner” in October 2008.The Eagan-based carrier said Thursday that it has reached agreements with Boeing and engine maker Rolls-Royce for the delivery of 18 of the planes over three years.

Financial details were not revealed. The planes list for about $150 million apiece, though airlines typically negotiate lower prices. The airline, which is under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, has not yet decided whether to buy or lease the planes.

Open sky policies a must for Africa

Southern Africa could create 70 000 more jobs by relaxing its policies on international travel.

The South African Development Community (SADC) region still restricts international air travel by limiting the number of flights to their cities as well as the number of airlines that can fly to them.

This makes it more expensive to travel by air and thus reduces the number of tourists visiting the region.

Frontier seeks to raise regional flights

The airline said Tuesday it issued a request for proposal this week to more than 50 communities within 1,200 miles of its Denver hub that want either regional jet or turboprop service.

The Denver-based carrier said last month it was buying 10, 74-seat turboprop aircraft with an option to purchase another 10. Frontier said it will fly the turboprop fleet to underserved markets in Colorado and the Rocky Mountains and serve as many as 18 destinations.

Frontier said the new service will begin in the middle of next year.


Ryanair announces new routes to Warsaw and Stockholm

Ryanair has announced plans to begin operating two new routes from Dublin to Warsaw and Stockholm next year.

The services, which are due to begin in February, will bring the total number of Ryanair routes from Dublin to 71.

Meanwhile, the airline has also announced the introduction of a new online check-in and priority boarding scheme from the start of next month.

Eirjet grounded by financial problems

The charter airline company, Eirjet, has confirmed that it has suspended all flight operations because of financial difficulties and fears about its future.

The Shannon-based company had been operating charter services out of Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Shannon and Knock.

The company leased passenger aircraft to holiday tour operators such as JWT, Sunworld and Toplight.

Southwest adds Dallas flights

Moving quickly to take advantage of a new federal law, Southwest Airlines Co. says it will sell one-stop flights from its home airport near downtown Dallas to Orlando and 27 other new cities at introductory fares starting at $99 each way.

The move is virtually certain to trigger a fierce fight between neighboring airlines — Southwest, the most profitable U.S. carrier, and American Airlines, the nation’s biggest. American hinted it would slash prices on flights from nearby Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Ryanair not considered revising offer

Irish no frills airline Ryanair today said it has not considered increasing its â?¬1.48bn offer for rival Aer Lingus but equally has not ruled out doing so.

There are a number of obstacles to Ryanair proceeding with its bid, namely that the Irish government still holds just over 28% while Aer Lingus’ employees and the Irish Airline Pilots’ Trust holds a further 13.2%.

Irish tycoon Denis O’Brien has also spent â?¬32m to buy a 2.1% stake in Aer Lingus and has vowed to oppose the takeover.

Lufthansa to employ 750 new staff for Munich hub

Deutsche Lufthansa AG said it is looking to recruit 750 new staff over the next few months in a move to expand its fast-growing hub in Munich. The German flag carrier said this includes 500 flight attendants and 250 staff for the check-in area.

The airline’s chief executive, Wolfgang Mayrhuber, announced last year the carrier would create 2,400 new jobs in Germany in 2006. A Lufthansa spokeswoman said the 750 jobs in Munich comes on top of this.

AirTran turns up the heat on the Hudson Valley

Six months after AirTran introduced its low-cost service at Westchester County Airport at White Plains and less than two weeks after it announced service at Stewart Airport at Newburgh, the Atlanta-based airline Monday said it would add three more cities to its Westchester service.

AirTran currently flies from Westchester to Atlanta, West Palm Beach and Orlando. As of December 21, it will add Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers and Tampa.

When it starts Stewart service on January 11, it will fly to Atlanta, Orlando, Tampa and Ft. Lauderdale.

Tiger Airways orders 8 Airbus A-320

The Singapore low-cost carrier, Tiger Airways, has announced it is planning to purchase 8 new Airbus A-320 aircraft, for a total expense of USD 500m.

The airline, which is controlled for 49% by Singapore Airlines, communicated in a note that the deliveries will begin in 2008 and completed in 2010. The A-320s are single-aisle airplanes, designed to cover short and mid range routes and can host up to 200 passengers.
