US Airways reports loss after hedging

US Airways Group Inc., formed last year from the merger of US Airways and American West Airlines, on Thursday posted a net loss for the third quarter after fuel hedging and merger-related costs.

The airline said the loss amounted to $78 million, or 88 cents per share, compared with a loss of $99 million, or $5.74 per share, for American West a year earlier. For accounting purposes, America West was treated as the acquiring company.

First French airport dedicated to the low-cost air traffic

In Marseille the first airport for the low-cost flights will open. It will be independent and will be built near the “Marseilles Provence”‘s airport. About 3,5 million passengers might pass every day. Ryanair wants to the new airport became its only hub in France, like base to launch its challenge to Air France-KLM, which has already provided to have recourse and threatens legal acts against the Irish airline with the accusation of social dumping.

Dusseldorf International Airport launches winter schedule

Dusseldorf International`s winter schedule begins with 68 airlines heading to 165 destinations all over the world. Among the destinations are interesting vacation spots like Samana in the Dominican Republic or Aswan in Egypt. More  connecting flights, including some to Southampton or Leipzig-Halle, and more frequent flights, for example at Lufthansa, make the largest airport in Nordrhein-Westfalen even more attractive for business travelers. The winter flight schedule begins next Sunday, October 29, and continues until March 24, 2007.

Virgin Atlantic launches flying without fear course

Virgin Atlantic is pleased to announce its first ever Flying Without Fear course (FWF) to be held at Southampton Airport on 03 December 2006. Virgin Atlantic, in association with FWF Limited, offers one day courses throughout the year, aimed at teaching sufferers how to overcome their fear. The course includes an optional 45 minute flight at the end of the session.

Northwest to start flying Boeing 787s in October 2008

Northwest Airlines Corp. said it plans to begin flying the new Boeing 787 “Dreamliner” in October 2008.The Eagan-based carrier said Thursday that it has reached agreements with Boeing and engine maker Rolls-Royce for the delivery of 18 of the planes over three years.

Financial details were not revealed. The planes list for about $150 million apiece, though airlines typically negotiate lower prices. The airline, which is under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, has not yet decided whether to buy or lease the planes.

Open sky policies a must for Africa

Southern Africa could create 70 000 more jobs by relaxing its policies on international travel.

The South African Development Community (SADC) region still restricts international air travel by limiting the number of flights to their cities as well as the number of airlines that can fly to them.

This makes it more expensive to travel by air and thus reduces the number of tourists visiting the region.

Eirjet grounded by financial problems

The charter airline company, Eirjet, has confirmed that it has suspended all flight operations because of financial difficulties and fears about its future.

The Shannon-based company had been operating charter services out of Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Shannon and Knock.

The company leased passenger aircraft to holiday tour operators such as JWT, Sunworld and Toplight.

Ryanair not considered revising offer

Irish no frills airline Ryanair today said it has not considered increasing its â?¬1.48bn offer for rival Aer Lingus but equally has not ruled out doing so.

There are a number of obstacles to Ryanair proceeding with its bid, namely that the Irish government still holds just over 28% while Aer Lingus’ employees and the Irish Airline Pilots’ Trust holds a further 13.2%.

Irish tycoon Denis O’Brien has also spent â?¬32m to buy a 2.1% stake in Aer Lingus and has vowed to oppose the takeover.

Lufthansa to employ 750 new staff for Munich hub

Deutsche Lufthansa AG said it is looking to recruit 750 new staff over the next few months in a move to expand its fast-growing hub in Munich. The German flag carrier said this includes 500 flight attendants and 250 staff for the check-in area.

The airline’s chief executive, Wolfgang Mayrhuber, announced last year the carrier would create 2,400 new jobs in Germany in 2006. A Lufthansa spokeswoman said the 750 jobs in Munich comes on top of this.
