Liverpool FC get flight to Madrid

Ryanair has announced a one-off return flight to Madrid for Liverpool FC fans travelling to the Spanish capital.

Usually, the route is available only in the summer, but the airline has bowed to popular demand.

Large numbers have called the Ryanair telephone lines inquiring about flights to Madrid for the Reds Champions League away match on February 25.

The special flight will depart Liverpool at 9am on February 25 and return from Madrid on February 26 at 1pm.

Lufthansa launches Italian airline

Lufthansa has launched an Italian subsidiary based in Milan and will begin services to the city four times a day from Heathrow at the end of March.

The German airline’s move comes as Italian carrier Alitalia remains in bankruptcy protection as it undergoes privatisation and a restructuring that will lead to a significant reduction in its network.

Lufthansa Italia will commence operations at Milan Malpensa on February 2 with a fleet of six aircraft. It will fly from Barcelona and Paris Charles de Gaulle to begin, adding services from Brussels, Budapest, Bucharest and Madrid in early March, and from Heathrow and Lisbon at the end of that month.

BA to restart flights to Saudi Arabia

British Airways is to resume flights to Riyadh and Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, in March, after a four year gap in services.

The growing importance of Middle-Eastern investors to Western economies means the routes which British Airways abandoned in 2005, as oil prices started to climb, are now commercially viable.

Previously the routes had been dogged by security problems, with the airline having to suspend services at certain times in the years immediately after 9/11.

Malaysian carrier eyes European tourists with new flights

European visitors are expected to flock to Southeast Asia next year as a low-cost airline starts flying from a London-based hub for European budget airlines to Kuala Lumpur in March.

AirAsia X started accepting bookings on Tuesday for its new direct flights between London Stansted and the Kuala Lumpur International Low-Cost Carrier Terminal.

Ryanair opens new base at Reus airport

Ireland-based low-cost airline Ryanair has opened its 26th base at the Reus Airport in Spain.The airline has announced new domestic routes which will link Reus with Santander, Seville, Santiago de Compostela and Palma de Mallorca starting December 19, 2008 and a new international route to Paris, France.

Four of the new Reus routes will operate as daily services, while the new service to Seville will operate twice daily

EasyJet steps into Sterling Airlines’ shoes

easyJet is starting a service between Gatwick and Copenhagen in the wake of the collapse of Scandinavian carrier Sterling Airlines.The daily flight will start on January 15 and run alongside easyJet’s existing Stansted-Copenhagen service, which operates three times a day.

EasyJet might also add capacity to the Gatwick route in the summer. The new route goes on sale on Wednesday November 15.

Flybe announces 2009 low-cost flight schedule

As part of the new plans flights will be available from Birmingham to Dubrovnik on Sundays and Split on Saturdays from May 3rd, from Exeter to Alicante, Dubrovnik, Faro, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca, and from Southampton to Alicante, Dubrovnik, Faro, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and Split.

London Gatwick will also serve Aberdeen, Belfast, Guernsey, Inverness, Isle of Man, Jersey and Newcastle.

Iceland Express offers new destinations for summer 2009

Iceland Express, the low cost airline providing cheap flights to and from Reykjavik, has released its summer timetable for 2009. The new schedule sees the airline increase its destination list to include 19 major European cities.

Iceland Express passengers are already able to book cheap flights to Iceland from new destinations such as Cyprus, Geneva and Krakow.

Jet2 dropping Barcelona route

Budget airline Jet2.com is dropping its Belfast to Barcelona route, but is adding Croatia and Cornwall to its destinations.

The airline is ending the Barcelona service from 26 October due to competition on the route. Jet2.com said customers who have booked flights to Barcelona in 2009 would get refunds or a free destination change.

EasyJet fills XL gap

EasyJet has scheduled additional flights to three holiday destinations next month following the demise of XL Leisure Group.

Extra flights have been added from Gatwick to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria; Dalaman in Turkey and Arracife in Lanzarote.
