US Airways picks Philadelphia for possible China route

US Airways will apply for a nonstop route from Shanghai to Philadelphia later this year. If approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation, service will begin in March 2008. It would also be the airline’s first service to Asia.

easyJet set to launch two new routes in May

Low fares airline easyJet is set to launch two new services — one from Edinburgh to the German city of Dortmund and one from Dortmund to Thessaloniki in Greece.

The four times weekly service from Edinburgh will commence on 30 May with the airline expecting to carry up to 55,000 passengers on this route in the first year. The service between Dortmund to Thessaloniki — a destination not previously served by the airline — is due to commence on 31 May.

Air France announces new Seattle service

Air France announced this week that its daily non-stop flight service to Seattle will commence as of June, 11, 2007.  The route will be serviced by the Airbus A330-200, which offers 219 seats, and will be equipped with the New Travel Concept.

The airline asserts that the service will best suit business and leisure customers, allowing for fast transits to and from cities in Europe and worldwide.


American to increase New York flights

American Airlines is adding flights to and from New York, raising the stakes in a showdown pitting the nation’s largest carrier against Continental Airlines Inc. and storm-battered JetBlue Airways Corp.

American said Thursday that it will begin nonstop service between New York and Las Vegas — a JetBlue stronghold — in September, and add a few flights to other cities, including San Francisco.

The appeal of New York is obvious. It is the nation’s largest city, a major tourist destination and a hub for international flights.


Ryanair starts new Granada-East Midlands link

The low-cost airline Ryanair starts a new route from Granada Airport from Tuesday, to East Midlands Airport in Nottingham.

The airline will fly the link three times a week and forecasts 2007 passenger volume of 40,000 people for the new route.
Ryanair began their Granada operation at the beginning of 2005 and also flies to Liverpool, London Stansted, Frankfurt and Milan from the airport which is now known as ‘’Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén.”

Bmibaby announces new routes from Cardiff

Bmibaby has announced further development at the airport of Cardiff which sees the introduction of a new route, increased frequencies on existing routes and a new early morning departure on a key domestic route.

For summer 2007, the airline will be introducing a new four times weekly service to Murcia which is the perfect gateway to the fast developing La Manga strip on Spain’s Costa Calida. Flights commence on 27 March 2007 but are available for booking now from just £29.99 one way including taxes.

easyJet starts ops at Madrid’s Barajas airport

Low-cost airline airline easyJet PLC said it today opened its 17th European base at Madrid’s Barajas airport.

The Luton-based airline says it expects to carry over 2 mln passengers from Madrid in 2007 on 18 routes – three domestic, 13 European and two to North Africa.

Last year easyJet launched 13 new routes to and from Spain and the airline has already announced a further 13 routes to and from Spain to be opened this year.

European carriers launch new nonstop air services to Boston

Three new nonstop flights from European airports to Boston are starting from this March with Air Lingus opening Dublin-Boston route from March 25, Iberia flying from Madrid to Boston from May 6 and flyglobespan operating the Glasgow-Boston from May 25, 2007.

Iran airline launches new flights

Iran’s national airline will begin direct flights to Venezuela next month in another sign of the two nations’ increasingly close ties.

Iran Air will operate a weekly, commercial flight linking Tehran and Caracas in March, the Venezuelan government said in a statement.

Flights leaving Tehran will stop in Syria’s capital of Damascus on their way to Caracas, it said.

Iran Air opened a new office at the headquarters of Venezuela’s state airline Conviasa in Caracas on Friday, and Convias will soon open a commercial office in Iran, the statement said.

US Deal to Open 51 Routes for Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus has signed a strategic partnership with JetBlue, a low-cost American airline, that will allow passengers access to 51 routes across the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Set to launch in August, the deal is designed to give Aer Lingus passengers travelling to New York JFK and Boston the opportunity to connect with JetBlue flights to destinations across the US, to Cancun in Mexico and to the Caribbean islands of Aruba, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic.

The deal comes against a backdrop of increased transatlantic competition. Delta and American Airlines are all adding capacity to their Irish routes while Flyglobespan last week agreed a deal to offer services to New York from Knock airport.
