EasyJet struggles to fill its new aircraft

9 May 2007

EasyJet became the latest airline to warn of difficult trading conditions yesterday as shares across the sector came under pressure.

The no frills airline said its passenger load factor – a measure of how full its planes are – fell to 83.1% last month compared with 86.4% last year. Shares in the company fell 7%, closing 49p down at 631p. Other stock in traditional carriers such as British Airways and Lufthansa also fell. Analysts warned that stronger profits are encouraging airlines to buy more planes and fly more routes, flooding the market with capacity and putting fares under pressure. EasyJet admitted yesterday that fare revenue was one of its biggest concerns.

easyJet urges European Commission to ban old aircraft

26 April 2007

Low-cost airline easyJet has called on European governments to remove around 700 of the oldest aircraft from Europe’s skies by banning any aircraft built before 1990 from operating within the European Union after 1st January 2012.

The no-frills carrier argues that older aircraft are far less fuel efficient and, therefore, more environmentally damaging than newer planes. As such, easyJet has called for a strict age-limiting policy to be implemented on aircraft used by European airlines.

EasyJet dumps Malta

20 March 2007

EasyJet, which calls itself Europe’s leading airline, appears to have lost interest in Malta, The Malta Independent on Sunday has learnt.

Nonetheless, industry sources said negotiations have not been cut off completely.

Last August, EasyJet had submitted an application to operate from London Luton and Mulhouse-Basel. The airline had kept a very low profile compared to competitors Ryanair, which were negotiating with the Maltese government during the same period.

Minister for Tourism and Culture Francis Zammit Dimech had said EasyJet wanted to operate from Gatwick, but the government could not provide the airline with market support to operate from this major airport, as it is not one of the underserved routes.
