SAS flights to resume today

27 April 2007

A three-day strike by Danish cabin crew members that forced Scandinavian air carrier SAS to cancel nearly 700 flights from its main hub in Copenhagen ended late Thursday, the airline said.

SAS said it aimed to resume services as soon as possible but estimated that at least 30 to 40 flights would be delayed or possibly cancelled on Friday. Late Thursday, the cabin crew union announced they would be returning for work Friday morning.

Passengers were advised to check company websites or the Copenhagen airport’s website for information on their respective flight.

Condor, a German airline, will drop its twice-weekly service to Frankfurt, Germany, at the end of April, but LTU International will pick up some of the slack by increasing its service to Munich and Dusseldorf in May.

Every six months, Condor looks at its service and decides where to make changes, said Janet Gorecki, a sales and marketing manager for the North American division of the airline.

“‘For the summer season, Orlando is a stronger destination,’” Gorecki said. “‘It was decided to focus on that and possibly increase capacity to Orlando in the future.’”

US Airways Whittles Away at Backlog

New York: Airline chaos

18 March 2007

Airlines unable to fly because of problems with deicing equipment during a winter storm left hundreds of passengers stranded on jets overnight at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The exact number of planes stuck on the tarmac Friday night and Saturday morning was unclear, but irate passengers and airport officials said as many as a dozen may have been involved.

Pilots and officials blamed some of the problems on a shortage of deicing fluid and a new federal regulation giving pilots a narrow window to get their planes in the air once the chemicals are applied. The change has meant some jets need to get doused repeatedly if their takeoffs are delayed.
