AirTran turns up the heat on the Hudson Valley

Six months after AirTran introduced its low-cost service at Westchester County Airport at White Plains and less than two weeks after it announced service at Stewart Airport at Newburgh, the Atlanta-based airline Monday said it would add three more cities to its Westchester service.

AirTran currently flies from Westchester to Atlanta, West Palm Beach and Orlando. As of December 21, it will add Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers and Tampa.

When it starts Stewart service on January 11, it will fly to Atlanta, Orlando, Tampa and Ft. Lauderdale.

AirTran retreats from rapid growth strategy

AirTran Airways, whose aggressive expansion in 2005 and early 2006 bucked an industry trend toward capacity cuts, is scaling back its growth strategy because of uncertain market conditions.Although the low-cost carrier, a unit of AirTran Holdings, remains one of the fastest growing U.S. airlines, factors such as volatility in jet fuel prices have caused it to trim its 2007 growth outlook, according to a senior company executive.

AirTran pushes back new aircraft delivery

Low-fare carrier AirTran Airways Inc. said Wednesday it plans to delay the delivery of eight Boeing 737 aircraft that were scheduled to be delivered in 2007 and 2008.

The Orlando, Fla.-based airline, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings Inc., said it is pushing back the delivery of five of the 19 aircrafts scheduled for delivery in 2007 and three of the 18 aircrafts planned for 2008. They will now be delivered between 2009 and 2011.


Phoenix is planning to woo AirTran

Phoenix-area airport officials will travel to Orlando next week to meet with AirTran Airways about starting service out of either Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport or Williams Gateway Airport in Mesa. AirTran is a fast-growing, low-cost carrier that operates nationwide, although its network of destinations is predominately on the East Coast. Phoenix is the largest metropolitan market not served by the airline.
