Low cost airline Virgin Blue Holdings Ltd said it is cautiously optimistic about its business outlook.

Chairman Mark Rowsthorn told its annual general meeting the company is taking more action on the management of its fuel costs.

He said the airline now has fuel hedges in place for over 89 pct of budgeted requirements for the year to June 2007 and some hedging in place for fiscal 2008.

Virgin Blue already has about 33 pct of Australia’s domestic aviation market, making it Australia’s second largest airline after Qantas Airways Ltd.

United Airlines has announced that it will offer new daily passenger and cargo services between Rome and Washington DC, pending Italian Government approval. United will begin service from Rome Fiumicino Airport on 2 April 2007 and service from Washington-Dulles on 1 April 2007 as part of its international expansion at its Washington-Dulles hub. Flights are open for sale.

A strike by Finnair cabin crews ended Friday after the Finnish flight attendants’ union and airline managers accepted a mediation proposal by the state-appointed labor conciliator.

The two-day strike, launched to protest the national carrier’s hiring policy, grounded Finnair’s international flights, forcing thousands of passengers to find alternative forms of transport.

Cabin crews will begin to return to work immediately, union representatives said, but it was not clear how soon the airline would resume regular traffic.

Big Sky Airlines said Thursday it will launch service between Midway Airport and Illinois’ capital starting Dec. 3.

The Montana-based airline will offer four daily round trip flights on weekdays and two on Saturdays and Sundays between Midway and Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield.

Currently, no airline offers flights to the capital from Midway.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG intends to restructure its core commercial flight operations by the beginning of 2007, which it expects will yield savings in the mid- to long-term.

The paper said the operations, which are centrally-controlled at the moment, will be split into three divisions; Frankfurt, Munich and its 11 other German airports.
