Budget airlines cleared for take-off to the U.S.

24 March 2007

Air travellers will enjoy lower fares and greater choice of airlines flying the Atlantic because of a controversial ‘Open Skies’ deal between the EU and the US, it has been claimed.

The landmark pact will open up Heathrow airport to European and US airlines wanting to fly the lucrative transatlantic route.

But critics said Britain and its EU partners had caved in to US pressure for a one-sided deal favouring America, because US airlines will enjoy far greater freedom in Europe than European airlines will in the US.
