Dusseldorf International Airport launches winter schedule

Dusseldorf International`s winter schedule begins with 68 airlines heading to 165 destinations all over the world. Among the destinations are interesting vacation spots like Samana in the Dominican Republic or Aswan in Egypt. MoreĀ  connecting flights, including some to Southampton or Leipzig-Halle, and more frequent flights, for example at Lufthansa, make the largest airport in Nordrhein-Westfalen even more attractive for business travelers. The winter flight schedule begins next Sunday, October 29, and continues until March 24, 2007.

Whizz to Warsaw

Low cost airline Wizz Air has launched flights to Eastern Europe from the North East.

The flights to Warsaw, capital of Poland, from Durham Tees Valley will start from 28 July 2007 and will operate three times a week.

John Stephenson, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air said: “We are very pleased to start flying from Durham Tees Valley. The airport is ideally placed to serve a large population area including Newcastle and provides excellent connectivity to the neighbouring cities.”

Iberia increases its passenger traffic

The load factor improved by 2.8 points compared to 2005, reaching 83.3%, a record level for this month. Traffic -measured in RPK (revenue passenger kilometre)- grew by 5.7%, while capacity -measured inĀ  ASK (available seat kilometre)- increased by 2.1%. The traffic growth in international flights (+8.9%), accompanied by a mix improvement; the load factor improved in all sectors. The average stage length increased by 5.9% due to the growing weight of long haul traffic.

Hand luggage only for Ryanair

Ryanair passengers bound for a number of Spanish destinations will be limited to travelling with hand luggage only today.

Strike action by baggage handlers across Spain, the second strike in as many weeks, means the carrier will not accept checked baggage on today’s flights to and from four Spanish airports: Seville, Girona, Granada and Jerez.

Air China announces weekly flights from Beijing to Sao Paulo

Air China is due to start a flight between Beijing and Sao Paulo with a stop off in Madrid, Spain, as of December 10, according to a local press report.

According to the Beijing Youth Daily, this would be the first time a Chinese company had a route from China to Latin America and will also be the first time Air China flies to Brazil.

Australia’s Virgin Blue cautiously optimistic on outlook

Low cost airline Virgin Blue Holdings Ltd said it is cautiously optimistic about its business outlook.

Chairman Mark Rowsthorn told its annual general meeting the company is taking more action on the management of its fuel costs.

He said the airline now has fuel hedges in place for over 89 pct of budgeted requirements for the year to June 2007 and some hedging in place for fiscal 2008.

Virgin Blue already has about 33 pct of Australia’s domestic aviation market, making it Australia’s second largest airline after Qantas Airways Ltd.

United Airlines to launch nonstop service from Rome Fiumicino to Washington-Dulles

United Airlines has announced that it will offer new daily passenger and cargo services between Rome and Washington DC, pending Italian Government approval. United will begin service from Rome Fiumicino Airport on 2 April 2007 and service from Washington-Dulles on 1 April 2007 as part of its international expansion at its Washington-Dulles hub. Flights are open for sale.

Finnair cabin staff strike ends

A strike by Finnair cabin crews ended Friday after the Finnish flight attendants’ union and airline managers accepted a mediation proposal by the state-appointed labor conciliator.

The two-day strike, launched to protest the national carrier’s hiring policy, grounded Finnair’s international flights, forcing thousands of passengers to find alternative forms of transport.

Cabin crews will begin to return to work immediately, union representatives said, but it was not clear how soon the airline would resume regular traffic.

New airline to take flight from Chicago Midway airport

Big Sky Airlines said Thursday it will launch service between Midway Airport and Illinois’ capital starting Dec. 3.

The Montana-based airline will offer four daily round trip flights on weekdays and two on Saturdays and Sundays between Midway and Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield.

Currently, no airline offers flights to the capital from Midway.
