Emirates announces $9 Billion Boeing 777-300ER order

Emirates announced an order for 30 Boeing Co. 777-300ER aircraft valued at $9.1 billion, as the largest Arab airline expands its fleet of long-range jets.

The airline disclosed the order today during the Farnborough Air Show in the U.K. Of the 30 planes, 18 had already been ordered and were listed in Boeing’s backlog as coming from an undisclosed customer.

The order “affirms Emirates’ strategy to become a world leading carrier and to further establish Dubai as a central gateway to worldwide air travel,” Emirates Chairman Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said in an e-mailed statement. “Our latest deal signals Emirates’ confidence in the growth of the thriving aviation sector.”

Emirates is latest airline to add Iraq service

Emirates says Baghdad will be among the new destinations it will begin serving this year. Emirates will begin flying to Baghdad in July, making it “the latest carrier to add routes to Iraq as the nation struggles to recover from war.”

Other Middle East carriers (FlyDubai and Qatar Airways) have also recently announced Baghdad service, writing that “the flights also are a possible sign of increased Arab investment in Iraq’s oil and commercial sectors.”

AC Milan signs £52m Emirates deal

The Dubai-owned airline Emirates has announced a 60m-euro (£52m, $82m) sponsorship deal with AC Milan.

The four-year deal, due to begin in July, will see Emirates become Serie A team AC Milan’s shirt sponsor in place of the Austrian betting company BWin.

Emirates already sponsors several football teams including Paris Saint Germain, Hamburg and Arsenal.

Jet Airways and Emirates Airline agree partnership

Jet Airways have entered into a codeshare and frequent flyer partnership on the Dubai-Mumbai and Delhi sectors. The flight will be operated by Jet Airways and will also carry the Emirates designator and will offer Emirates customers better access to flights across Jet’s comprehensive Indian network.

Codeshares will also apply on some Emitares operated flights from India to DXB offering a reciprocal arrangement and smooth transfers to Jet’s clientele wishing to connect to an Emirates onward flight.

Spas, showers and more: Emirates Airline invites guests aboard Airbus A380 at LAX

If Ritz-Carlton Hotels put a commercial jetliner into service, it would be like the Airbus A380-800 that Emirates Airline displayed Tuesday at Los Angeles International Airport.

It is equipped with two shower-spas, two lounges and 14 first-class “suites” fitted with vanities, mini-bars, widescreen video displays and seats that convert to beds.

The showers and adjoining spas — the first to be installed on a commercial aircraft — are available to first-class passengers, who pay about $18,000 for a round-trip ticket from Dubai to New York.

Airline allows cell phone calls in-flight

The Dubai-base Emirates airline has announced a policy of allowing passengers to make cell phone calls during flight, and is reportedly the first airline in the world to do so.

The airline’s Airbus A340 has been modified to prevent calls from interfering with aviation electronics.

Calls are allowed only at cruising altitude during the day, and passengers are encouraged to use “silent mode” so other passengers aren’t disturbed by ringtones.

Emirates’ growth could make it world’s largest airline

Emirates Airline has ordered a jaw-dropping 245 new widebody planes, but the company’s president shuns suggestions that he wants to create the world’s biggest airline.

“I’m not bothered personally if that makes us the biggest or not,” Emirates President Tim Clark said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Aviation analysts say that the airline’s unprecedented rate of growth would make it the world’s largest within the next decade. At last month’s Dubai Air Show, Emirates ordered 120 Airbus A350XWB jets, 11 additional A380 super-jumbos — increasing its total order to 58 — and a dozen Boeing 777-300ERs — which more than double its current fleet of 112 planes.
