Ryanair opens domestic routes in France and Germany

Ryanair launches its first domestic routes in France, from Marseille to Paris, and Germany from Frankfurt Hahn to Berlin. The routes will start in May 2008.

BA’s Walsh says airline continues to eye Iberia

British Airways has confirmed it is continuing to consider a potential bid for Iberia Lineas Aereas de Espana.

A BA spokesman said the UK flag carrier was keeping the possibility of a bid for Iberia ”under review” following a report in which BA chief executive Willie Walsh said he had not ruled out an approach for the Spanish flag carrier.

BA is particularly interested in Iberia because a tie-up would give it greater access to South America, a region to which it only runs 10 flights a week from Heathrow.

Low cost flights from the UK to Cyprus

Airline allows cell phone calls in-flight

The Dubai-base Emirates airline has announced a policy of allowing passengers to make cell phone calls during flight, and is reportedly the first airline in the world to do so.

The airline’s Airbus A340 has been modified to prevent calls from interfering with aviation electronics.

Calls are allowed only at cruising altitude during the day, and passengers are encouraged to use “‘silent mode'” so other passengers aren’t disturbed by ringtones.

Crude Costs Push Airline Into Chapter 11

The sun is not shining on Aloha Airgroup as the Hawaiian airline files for bankruptcy to stay in business. The company blames high fuel costs and a local competitor.

The Honolulu, HI-based airline and freight service filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Friday. Aloha presented the court with a financial plan in hopes that it can keep up normal operations and retain its 3,500 employees. The financial plan will consist of a cash collateral financing arrangement with its principle capital lender General Motors Acceptance Corporation a subsidiary of private -equity firm Cerberus Capital Management and General Motors.

Vueling will operate 8 destinations in Ibiza

Vueling, the new-generation airline, culminates its most ambitious Ibiza programme ever, by linking the island with eight destinations in Spain, France, and Italy. Overall, Vueling puts on sale more that 430,000 seats in order to fly between March and October.

From May 30th to September 21st, the company will base one Airbus A-320 at Ibiza airport. This will reinforce the Barcelona and Valencia routes and will allow three new destinations: Seville, Bilbao, and Alicante.

Challenge to TGV as Ryanair brings budget air travel to France

Ryanair, Europe’s most successful low-cost airline, is going nose to nose with Europe’s largest and most successful high-speed railway system.

The Irish-based airline announced yesterday that it was starting cheap flights in May from Beauvais airport, 50 miles north-west of Paris, to Marseilles. Ryanair will also try to break into the German domestic market for the first time with flights between Frankfurt and Berlin.

Emirates to launch low-cost airline

UAE’s premium airline, Emirates, will launch a new low-cost carrier in response to the growing number of passengers traveling to and from the UAE, according to the official news agency Wam. The decision was taken by Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai.

A statement said that the new airline would price its services to passengers based on their ”’economic and living conditions to suit their incomes.”’

EasyJet launches priority boarding season ticket

EasyJet has announced an annual programme for passengers wanting to use its Speedy Boarding priority system on a regular basis.

Called easyJet Plus, it allows passengers to be among the first to board by showing a credit-card sized membership card at the gate without the need to pre-book. The card will be popular among business travellers who like to get a seat close to the front of the aircraft.
